A primary-source research archive on the failure of the Banqiao Dam and the cascading reservoir failures across the Zhumadian region of Henan Province, China, in August 1975 — compiled in support of a forthcoming academic monograph.
In early August 1975, Typhoon Nina stalled over the upper Huai River basin and produced extreme, sustained rainfall over southern Henan Province. Over the following days the Banqiao Dam and a number of other reservoirs in the Zhumadian region failed. The event is documented in Chinese and international engineering and hydrology literature as among the most severe dam-failure disasters on record, though its scale, causes, and consequences went largely unpublicized outside specialist literature for many years afterward.
Much of what circulates about this event online repeats secondhand claims — some accurate, many exaggerated, distorted, or shaped by political agendas on more than one side — without traceable sourcing. This project takes the opposite approach: every claim published here is built outward from identifiable primary material — engineering records, meteorological and hydrological data, government and technical archives, and first-hand testimony — with its provenance stated. Where the evidence is incomplete or contested, that is stated too, rather than smoothed over. See Sources & Methodology.
